Washington State University’s College of Education offers its teacher preparation students the double advantages of a major research institution and a level of personal attention more common at smaller colleges. Faculty members who are leaders in their fields—ranging from English language learning to special education—infuse their lessons with the latest information about which classroom practices really work. In 2009, the College of Education received exemplary reports from both state and national accreditation teams.
At WSU, a community of dedicated teachers and learners helps students prepare for a successful career in education.
An Atmosphere of Excellence
The College of Education aims to provide students with an environment that promotes the best possible learning experience, including a dedicated education library. Faculty members are committed to taking a personal interest in students' academic and professional careers.
Cohort-Based Learning
The 14-month Master in Teaching program is cohort-based, forming a supportive network. Depending on the student’s focus, courses may include literacy, social studies, science, math, reading, health, fitness or fine arts methods. Students also study diversity in schools and society, educational technology, the history of education and research-based effective practices.
Culminating Research Project
All MIT students complete a research project and present the project results at the culmination of their program. The research projects are usually aimed at examining teaching and educational issues, with the focus on understanding the positive impact of education on student learning.
Teacher Certification
The College of Education’s collaborative National Board for Professional Teaching Standards program is becoming the model for advancing the quality of teaching and learning in America's classrooms. Teachers who have completed the WSU NBPTS program have consistently exceeded the national and state certification rates.
